The Mechanism — Why It Happens
Sleep-deprived athletes show measurable declines in neuromuscular coordination, reaction time, and balance/proprioception — paired with increased biomechanical stress on joints. The body loses its ability to protect itself when running on insufficient sleep.
Chronic insomnia raises sport-related concussion risk roughly 3x, per Raikes et al. (Sleep Medicine, 2019; 190 NCAA D1 athletes) — suggesting sleep protects not just the joints, but the brain.
